This year at Camp Whitsett, I was the SPL. It was a great camp with some great activities. There were a lot of merit badges that the group got to work on. There was climbing, COPE, archery, rifle shooting, leatherworking, and many more. When we got up to the camp, we put all of our stuff at the camp site and got ready for the swim test at the waterfront. Our guide, Jared, took us on a short tour of the camp on our way to the waterfront. While we were swimming, there was a bit of thunder overhead. Then there came a light drizzle, which slowly got worse. Once we got back to camp, we set up our tents and put everything away. We had a little down time between then and dinner, so I held a quick uniform inspection to make sure everyone was ready for dinner. When we got to the dining hall, we lined up for the flag ceremony in front of the flag pole. Afterwards, we ate a great dinner under the canopy. Then we went to an awesome campfire with skits, songs, and counselors making complete goofballs out of themselves. Throughout the week, I worked on Climbing merit badge and project COPE, which stands for Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience. I was actually a year too young to participate in COPE, but they decided to make a small exception. By the end of the week, I had gone through and completed my merit badge and done the high ropes course three times in one day. The final night, there was a final campfire that was once again filled with songs, skits and wacky counselors. The fires were huge and dancing and the sky was clear with many stars. The trip home would be one that would be peaceful, quiet and seemingly quick. Camp Whitsett was a great place to go to this summer, and I would love to go back.
